Wounded Warrior Cruise 2010
Northern Virginia Sail & Power Squadron
Patuxent River Power Squadron
Rockville Power Squadron
The August 7, 2010 Wounded Warrior cruise was jointly held by
the three Power Squadrons noted above. It was held at the
Patuxent River Naval Air Station and serviced wounded warriors
and their families from Walter Reed Army Hospital and Fort
Belvoir Hospital. There were about ten boats for more than 40
warriors, divided between sailboats and power boats. A shore crew
helped the boats find slips and to ease docking and undocking.
Everyone had
a super time in great weather on the water. Boats went on the
Patuxent River, into Solomons Island marinas, and out on Chesapeake
Bay. Warriors relaxed, crewed, steered, or all three!
Photographers afloat and ashore took lots of pictures for the event.
Upon returning to the shore, the entire group enjoyed a catered
picnic. The shore party had decorated an outdoor pavillion that held everyone.
It was quite a spread and no
one left hungry. Warriors exchanged tales of their adventures
afloat and chatted with the USPS boaters.
When the bus and van arrived to take the
warriors back home, there were some lumps in throats as goodbyes and
thank-yous were exchanged. Both warriors and boaters were touched
by the selflessness of each other, both at this event and in
service to our country.
