NVSPS Training Courses

NVSPS offers two groups of boating courses: basic courses open to the public and more advanced ones that are reserved for United States Power Squadron members. If you have questions about the courses, please contact our Education Officer using this email link. Click here to see a consolidated brochure that shows both basic and advanced course schedules.

Basic Boating Courses

We offer two certified instructor safe boating courses to the general public:
 
  • BoatSmart is a four week class designed to teach you the fundamentals of safe boat handling.
  • The Squadron Boating Course is an eight week comprehensive course which also includes basic piloting and navigation.

    • Check our schedule to see what basic courses are being offered at various times during the year.

    Separately we also offer ChartSmart, a four week basic piloting and navigation course.

    Advanced Member Courses

    Once an individual completes and passes a Basic Boating course, they may become a member of the United States Power Squadron. Local chapters such as Northern Virginia Sail & Power Squadron offer members a number of courses (see their descriptions), including Seamanship, Piloting, Advanced Piloting, Junior Navigation, Sail, and others.
